EXO Insights develops digital tools to improve business performance, specifically in high-risk, mission-critical environments, like nuclear power, military, police, emergency services, and manufacturing.

New EXO App

EXO’s BioTwin software uses point-of-view video (captured with wearable camera glasses), environment trackers, and various sensors in combination with a virtual recreation of the environment to generate high-quality analytics. A nuclear engineer, for instance, could run through diagnostic training and the training facilitator could then use BioTwin to view live POV footage of the trainee, including eye tracking, heart rate, stress levels, tunnel vision, etc. The training facilitator could also view a 3D rendering of the training environment and the location and movement of the trainee.

EXO originally contracted me to improve a specific screen related to jet fighter pilot training, but I was eventually tasked with completely overhauling BioTwin’s UX and UI.

Old Jet UI New Jet UI

The jet fighter pilot screen was tracking the joystick movement and plane orientation. User feedback suggested supervisors had trouble interpreting the information quickly, which was integral to the training process. After several iterations and speaking with the developers, I came up with an idea to incorporate 3D models of the actual plane controls into the UI, which allowed supervisors, who were already familiar with the plane controls, to quickly interpret the pertinent information.

I redesigned the “Events” system, which is a core aspect of BioTwin that allows supervisors to quickly create and timestamp important moments.

Old Events UI New Events UI

I simplified much of the original event UI and streamlined the customizable aspects since speed was one of the most important aspects of the user experience.

I redesigned the 3D environment to incorporate a wide variety of new tools that were not originally present. I designed a tool panel with drop-downs for each interaction. The original UI would open a pop-up for each interaction which users found slow and cumbersome. The new UI also provided options for more detailed control of the 3D environment, which directly improves the usefulness of the analytics.

Old 3D UI New 3D UI

I redesigned the broader application removing unused features, like the search bar, and increasing focus on the most important aspects for users.

Old App UI New App UI

I simplified the design of the analytics, adding colour to indicate points of interest, and making the design more uniform since developers wanted to implement a modular customizable system to the UI. The new customization option would allow users to add and remove analytics from screens, so they would only have to see the most relevant information. This change necessitates analytics that have a standard size and layout.

Other designs for EXO included marketing materials. I made a poster detailing some aspects of EXO’s BioTwin system and created multiple illustrations for marketing presentations. The presentations give a quick overview of how BioTwin works and the illustrations are meant to be interchangeable depending on the client.
